Old familiars of the USENET group rec.arts.sf.fandom will be remember the line, "The lurkers support me in email."
I've just been nudzhed by a lurker, and it's one of those things where I'm not sure if I'm writing well enough for my meaning to be clear, or if my reading skills are declining in my old age. Like Thurber, I have developed inflammation of the sentence structure and a definite hardening of the paragraphs.
As may be... I'm reminded of the one-panel cartoon Garry Trudeau did in Trout Fishing In the Reflecting Pool: Sam Ervin tells the Senate Watergate committee, "I am not bein' harrassin' toward the witness. I'm being gruff, and lovable, and yew know it."
So if there's doubt in anyone's mind when it comes to my regard of Ms. Burner:
I've voted for Darcy twice -- once in the primary, once in the general. I contributed to her campaign. I hope to have the chance to do both again, and will do so gladly. I've thought about volunteering for her campaign. I think she and Raven McShane are video naturals.
I am humble about my impact in the world. So while it was gratifying the Times selected my letter to be "lead", and while I may also have had the hope it would have some influence, the idea that the candidate herself might read and agree with the letter was... gobsmacking. So I was making a nervous joke.
On the other hand, I've always heard Darcy is very friendly and accessible. I guess this is just evidence to support that.
To say that we need more -- many more -- people in the Congress open to listening to their constituents to that degree would be an understatement. In fact, I would say that's the biggest issue facing our political system today, bigger than Iraq. Nothing is as corrosive to our republic as the growing sense by common everyday citizens that they have no voice, and are never heard.
Here's hoping Darcy, good listener that she is, is sworn in to serve in January, 2009.
