Seafood, there-food. Why are we talking like this?

I saw [livejournal.com profile] madrobins write about the back-and-forth her daughter has been through lately about vegetarianism. She ends with:

"In the meantime we're going to spend more of our animal-protein-dollar on foods that are raised as humanely as possible. I have no problem being at the top of the food chain, but there's no need to be a brute about it."

This reminded me of a resource the Monterey Bay Aquarium does, their Seafood Watch. As their page for the West Coast region elaborates,

"Our Seafood Watch regional guides contain the latest information on sustainable seafood choices available in different regions of the U.S. Our "Best Choices" are abundant, well managed and fished or farmed in environmentally friendly ways. Seafood to "Avoid" are overfished and/or fished or farmed in ways that harm other marine life or the environment."

I don't know of any equivalent for land-based food, but I hope this is helpful... Not only for Madeleine and YG, but for anyone else with similar concerns.

Yeah, I wrote a PB about the unsustainable orange roughy. Nobody wants it. Go figure. Sigh.

Picture book manuscript. My agent said it's well written, but not saleable. What? No one wants to read about an orange roughy? Hee, hee!

I don't suppose they turned down An Inconvenient Truth, too? (The book, not the movie.)

Anyway... My own experience is that folks are almost always interested about food.

(obSF: Kzinti bartender to a human walking through the door: "We don't serve food here!")

I get it! LOL!!! (I'd be a bit freaked to enter a bar like that!)

It's helpful to me! Thank you so much for the referral. Alas, YG does not eat fish (nor do her sister or father). But I'm glad to know what fish I can get for myself.
