Illumination Night

libertangoI forget just how I got there, but I recently found http://www.loobylu.com/ This is a blog by someone doing a lot of... well, homey art, for lack of a better phrase. (Do pay attention to the Hokusai tribute she has a link to. The crest of the wave is made up of bunnies.) Here's an example, that I find charming:
The fireflies, the little lights, the chinese lantern up in the left corner... This all reminds me a great deal of summer nights we spent on Martha's Vineyard, when I was a boy.
Oak Bluffs, one of the towns on Martha's Vineyard, has a tradition called Illumination Night. It's called on short notice, usually held on a Wednesday, and always in August. Despite that, it draws 10,000 or so visitors. I had to go hunting a bit, but here's a picture:
That's very much a summer memory for me. Dad being Dad, he had friends in Oak Bluffs, so we always had a place to stay over the night -- very precious. I remember it was a black family, but I can't remember any of their names. Unsurprising after 35 years, I suppose. I do remember they were always kind and gracious to us, and that it was always a happy time to see them again. (Remember this was the late 1960s, in Massachusetts.)
