[livejournal.com profile] kate_schaefer wrote to me with a snippet of something we were talking about last night:

Trinidad!
...and the big Mississippi,
and the town Honolulu...

This was just enough to get me finding a few things. The piece in question is "The Geographical Fugue" or "Fuge aus der Geographie" by Ernst Toch.

While searching for more details, I found this reminiscence by Lawrence Weschler, who is Toch's grandson. Among other things, it turns out the English translation of the piece was made at the instigation of John Cage -- which is probably why I performed it with my college choir, as both Cage and I are alumni of Pomona College.

And apropos of spoken choruses, this reminded me to go googling for the full text of the Vestibules' "Bulbous Bouffant", whose page includes the bonus of a link to a video-game music video of the original skit, here, so people can even listen to it.

I performed at Yale, with the New Blue. We just did it because it was cool.
