This is the coolest thing I've heard in a while:

I was listening to the PRI/BBC joint-venture program The World on KCRW, and they did this piece about a traveller.

Ramon is from the Netherlands. Back in May, he started going on a long trip. Being a broke college student, he came up with an interesting way to finance it: Ask people if he can stay over for just one night.

This being 2001, he put up a website: LetMeStayForADay.com

He has daily reports from the road, tons of pics, and a way for you, too, to offer to let him stay at your place for a day. He's apparently broke enough that he doesn't have a laptop, so he prefers to stay with people who have an Internet connection so he can update the site.

It all sounds like it could be incredibly creepy, but instead he comes across as a very nice guy. Example: Each family he stays with is to give him a gift. He then takes the gift -- and gives it to the next host. What that means is that when he shows up at your door, he has a gift for you. Then you give him one when he leaves, to pass on to the next host. Examples have included books, CDs, olive oil in a ceramic jar, an acoustic guitar...

Remarkably sensible. Warm hearted. Might even be a good idea to swipe for the various sf fan funds.
