Today at the Post Office, I actually had three packages waiting for me.
First off, was the one from Florida. This had a VHS tape of the Alan Rudolph film Trouble In Mind. For some reason, Scarecrow Video has a $200 reserve on the tape. This means you have to make a deposit of $200 to rent it.
It cost me $7.99 at eBay, shipping and taxes included. Go figure.
(Along similar lines, Rudolph's film The Moderns also has a $200 reserve. That one cost me $25.49 -- more than Trouble In Mind, but no $200. Scarecrow says it uses reserves to cover the possible cost of replacement of rare items.)
Next up, from somewhere in Germany, an audio CD single of the Peter Gabriel/Deep Forest collaboration, "While the Earth Sleeps". This song was recorded for the movie Strange Days, and the single -- released only in Europe -- has an extended play version of the song almost twice the length of the US release. Way cool. This was also from eBay, for $26.
Last, perhaps the greatest tribute to the international nature of the Net. Due to recent events, I checked out the website of King Abdullah of Jordan. His website features a splash page using a Shockwave movie that has a recording of music featuring the instrument the oud. I went to the acknowledgements page and found out the music was by Charbel Rouhana, from his album Salamat.
So.
It took a while through Google, but I was able to find an online vendor, House of Music Online, who would sell me the album.
From Lebanon.
Cool.
I mean, great music, from exotic places, and I get to feel a frisson that I am helping a recovering country back onto its feet? Yes, the lack of a secure ordering page was worrisome... But sometimes, you just gotta live dangerously. :)
Abdullah's wife, Queen Rania, also has great Arab music on her site. Typically, though, it's been harder to find. The player is Naseer Shamma, and the album is Ishraq. It's on an Italian label, Musica Immagine, 1996, catalog number MR10019. If anyone knows how or where to order it, I'd be grateful.
Florida, Germany, and Lebanon. Not bad for a silly PO Box in Bellevue. :)
