The Ethics of Gifts

According to "NY Times Reporter to Repay Oprah Show for Makeover" (March 6, 2004), the Times has required a reporter to reimburse a $50,000 gift.
Yet US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has received a $50,000 gift from a current litigant -- which is what his duck hunting trip via private jets with Vice President Dick Cheney and their respective staffs would cost the common citizen -- and the Times has not called for him to recuse himself from the pending case.
While the Times' internal standards are commendable, should they really be more stringent than those for the Supreme Court? Or perhaps the Times should ask Justice Scalia to do the honorable thing.
Sincerely Yours,
etc.
