An earth-shattering kaboom.

My Oregonian friends may well remember this on their own, but here at work we just watched a video of the famous "Exploding Whale Incident". There's also a Wikipedia article, though I can't find Dave Barry's column of May 20, 1990 online. Any help would be appreciated, because how this all started was a cow-orker saying how funny it was, and then he explained the context as best he could.
