There are many for whom 11 Sept 2001 has forever changed them, because they were touched directly -- my alt.poly acquaintance [livejournal.com profile] clairaide, for one.

But for many others, "we were forever changed" is just empty rhetoric.

Now, thanks to a swell article in the 10 March Oregonian, we can see just how empty that rhetoric is. The article analyzes new polling data from Gallup that indicate life in the US is, with notable exceptions like the unfortunate one above, same as it ever was.

Which is the ultimate victory over terrorism, I suppose. Finally, a positive angle to the indifference Americans keep being told they have. :)

That said, life hasn't changed, but our level of apprehension and perhaps some of our decision-making criteria, have.
