Dig this letterpress card with reversible outlines of London and San Francisco.

He's a little obsessed about a certain phone that 97% of cell phone shoppers and 87% of "smartphone" shoppers don't buy... But the New York Times' David Pogue, in his end-of-the-year roundup of tech calls our attention to something that's kind of nifty: "Readability", a... well, it's not a plug-in, it's not an add-on, it's more of a redirector.

The easiest way to explain is by illustration, thus this picture. On the left is a sample page from About.com, a site known for loading the page with visual junk. On the right is what happens to the page after Readability takes its swing at it -- much cleaner, much more readable, even (dare one say it) useful.

Definitely worth taking a look at.

I just like the way this image of a dress seems almost inhabited.

You say you're a Steampunk. You know what you really, really need? A motorcycle. A motorcycle that looks like it could've been put together with parts lying around Babbage's workshop.

And, hey, it worked for T.E. Lawrence, Duane Allman, and Pete Conrad.

(Here's the manufacturer's own site.)

San Miguel ad

A magazine ad for San Miguel Dark beer, using a quote from R.H. Dana's Two Years Before the Mast.

I remember a whole series of these, using Conrad and probably other authors as well. They were in magazines of the late 1970's, early 1980's. San Miguel Dark was my favorite beer in college, and it was partly because I was a sucker for these images.

"Classic Beer of the Pacific" says the slug line, and back then, it was.

These days, it seems all I can find is a lager from San Miguel. Just not the same, at all. The sheet this is on has only another ad on the reverse, so I don't know what magazine this is from. My google-fu turns up nothing. I'd like to see the others, though, for old times' sake.

As I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] akirlu last night:

This is the "Steelmark" logo, from the American Iron and Steel Institute, aka the steel lobby.

This is the Pittsburgh Steelers' logo.

This is "History & Origin of the Pittsburgh Steelers Logo."

And, um, like that.
