Quiller-Couch to Sassoon
Jul. 25th, 2009 04:58 pmIt's framed here in my office, next to my writing desk. A letter from Arthur Quiller-Couch to Siegfried Sasoon, that came along with a book I bought in Scottsdale, Arizona. They'd somehow gotten hold of many of Sassoon's books -- this was tucked into a copy of Q's Adventures in Criticism among them.

Dear Mr. Siegfried Sassoon
Yes : I shall be happy to write a short article or two for "The Daily Herald". "Leaves of Grass" or "Hans Anderson" or Cobbett's "Rural Rides" -- any one of them would do for a peg. If my articles don't do your paper any good, still my good wishes may -- I have given up speculating on what will do any good. But as an admirer of your work I can sign myself
Sincerely yours
Arthur Quiller-Couch

Between those last few lines and the black mourning stripe around the note paper, it has an almost perfect elegiac tone, I think.
