On Wednesday night, we went to see Slaid Cleaves at the Triple Door.

This was pretty much a spur-of-the-moment thing -- I'd been reminded by an e-mail from Slaid's mailing list the concert was happening at all.

I like Slaid a lot, and have since getting his album No Angel Knows. I met him a few years ago down at an Oktoberfest thing he played at in Portland. He's very down to earth, very unassuming. This concert was no different -- he gave out credit to folks he was playing with, and many songs were written by others. In fact, his new album, Unsung, is a collection of songs he's recorded written by musicians he doesn't think have gotten enough exposure.

The album was co-produced by his schoolyard buddy, Rod Picott. (The web site says that name should be pronounced "pie-caught".) Rod and Slaid met on the bus going to 7th grade, back in South Berwick, Maine. (Note to UK readers: That's pronounced "burr-wick", and not "bear-ick", as Berwick-on-Tweed is.) I joked to Ulrika, "Maybe I should use a new Genre tag with MP3s -- "South Berwick Folk". So Rod was the opening act, although he said that wasn't so much because he was Unsung's producer as it was because he had the incriminating dirt on Slaid.

There are certainly similarities. Guitar-based, singer-songwriter, usually going for the heartstrings.

Rod also had support with a violinist named Amanda 'Pearl' Shires -- that link goes to her solo album, she also plays with Thrift Store Cowboys. She's cute as a button, plays a fine fiddle, has a good backup voice, and tons of attitude in a good way.

Food at the Triple Door is served by Wild Ginger, who are located upstairs. We had a fairly broad sample -- shrimp skewers, lamb skewers, potstickers, duck with plum sauce, cilantro, and bao-like buns. All were yummy, and the price totaled out at about the same as Outback, which given we're talking theater prices here, is reasonable.

Tickets for the show itself were $15.
