From the Friday Five:

1. If you could eat dinner with and "get to know" one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? Anyone in history, or current day? Wow. Um. Ezra Pound, pre-WWII. I'd never get a word in edgewise, but he knew everybody at the time, and was unquestionably brilliant. At his place, on the Italian Riviera, I think (especially with his neighbor, Max Beerbohm.).

2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? Who was it and how did you feel? Heinlein. I was driving home from work, and NPR started their obit with a reading of the opening lines of Stranger In a Strange Land. Not his best book, but I knew what had happened, at that point. My dad died when I was seven. Heinlein's juveniles, for all that people complain about their paternalism after the fact, were very "dad-like" for me. And for many others, too, I suspect.

3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? Be a famous person? Hm. Juliette Binoche's husband? ;) (If I get to bring my camera. And lots of film.)

4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? Who? When about 11 or 12, people thought I looked like Woody Allen. One time I almost got mobbed outside a movie theatre in an LA suburb where I'd just watched a Woody double-feature. No joke. These days, though, I look like no one famous -- other than myself, of course. :)

5. Have you ever met anyone famous? Met anyone? Hm. Depends on what you mean by "famous". If you're into science fiction authors, I've met many of them, mostly because I've been in LA fandom for over 15 years. Took Harlan and Susan Ellison out to dinner one time. I've met some computer honchos, including billg@microsoft.com -- and Melinda Gates, who's more impressive, to my mind. I've met Marvin Minsky, from MIT. I've met a bunch of California politicians, including former Speaker of the Assembly Jesse Unruh. Hm. Ex-Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Ex-President Giscard d'Estang. (after-college-lecture lunches). Mike Medavoy, the putz who used to run Orion and Tri-Star pictures, because I went to school with his son. I have no idea how typical or atypical that really is.
