Like I said, I want to keep these posts to 2-3 pictures each. I have lots. But the idea is that it enforces a kind of discipline. Somewhat like [livejournal.com profile] athenais and her ten-point lists.

So, we went down to Orycon on 5-7 November -- the weekend before last. This is a science fiction convention in Portland, Oregon (since I know some of you aren't fannish).

The hotel is on Hayden Island, which is just across the Columbia River from Vancouver, Washington. Portland is actually about 10 miles farther south on I-5, and against the banks of the Willamette... I'll bet because the Willamette was better behaved to the original Anglo settlers in the 1840s-1850s or so.

Here's the bridge across the Columbia:

As in many fannish events, much of the socializing revolved around food. There was one bunch of us who went to BJ's, a pizza and brewpub place that's on Hayden Island, but is an old favorite of ours from when we used to go their original location at Balboa Beach, in Orange County.

I took a number of shots of just random people crowded in the vestibule, waiting for a table. I like this one of a scout best:

We also hung out in the Fan Room, where many of we older types usually hang out during an Orycon. This is Jenna Faulkner:

Even though I think my Kodak DC4800 digicam does reasonably well under low light conditions (and I hate flash), I'm still fighting for every photon both in that photo, and others of people in the fan lounge. It's a less well lit space than one would think, which only goes to show the ability of the human eye to adjust. I guess I'm saying, yeah, I know that pic is a bit grainy, but I still like it.

Grainy is OK sometimes--provides a different effect.

I like the luminosity of the boyscout's face.

Do you need to deal with photo releases if you're posting people's faces on the Web?

Model releases

I've never really worked with model releases. That's mostly because for the longest time I was taking pictures of people I either personally knew, or in a photojournalist mode (campaign events, concerts, that sort of thing).

But you made me curious, so I went looking.

Here's a discussion on photo.net about street photography. Photo.net has been a pretty reliable source for me in the past.

The key seems to be, the pictures should have been taken in a public place, and they're not being used to promote something. In other words, there's not a reasonable expectation of privacy, nor is the image being used for gain. One could perhaps run into some trouble in the copy for the caption -- possibly even libellous -- but as the guy points out, a model release wouldn't help you with that anyway.

Think about my Howard Dean photos. It'd be really tough to work a crowd and get a model release from everyone -- and when was the last time you had someone ask you to sign one at such an event?

OTOH, a convention may well be a borderline case. Because, being memebership-based, is it really "public"? I dunno.

If [livejournal.com profile] jeliza, [livejournal.com profile] pecunium, or [livejournal.com profile] photosexual reads this... What are your thoughts, guys?

Thanks for the links--I'll read them later. (Too tired now.)

I got a camera in May and fell in love with photography and discovered some talent for it. I want to learn more about it. The only workshop I've taken so far, though, was in erotic photography, and we focused a good deal on legalities of photography and model releases. I haven't quite figured out the guidelines on taking pictures of people, given that something you post innocently on the Web can be picked up and (not exactly legally, but...) and used on a commercial site. (I know of this happening and have had some personal experience with it.)

The Internet makes copyright, intellectual property, and the divisions between public and private a morass.

OK, I lied; I went to the site you linked. Very interesting...although not necessarily leaving me with a ton more clarity on the subject!

Thanks.

Both photo entries show a nice variety of your photography skills and interests. I particularly like the Boy Scout photo! It makes me wonder what's going on; it engages me instead of simply pleasing my eye.

Hey! I'm trying to get ahold of Jenna. :) I went to school with her at CVHS in Spokane. If you are still in touch with her, can you let her know I'd love to chat with her? My web address is http://www.zahand.com

Thanks!
