Writing letters
Dec. 5th, 2004 07:17 pmI had a letter to the editor of the Seattle Times published today. Since I'm not sure when it'll go behind an archive wall, here it is in full, as published:

Dominion vs. destruction
I was saddened to read of the new rules proposed by the Bush administration regarding salmon habitat. Genesis tells us humanity has "dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth" (Genesis 1:26).
But "dominion" does not mean "destruction." It means to preserve, protect, defend, study, govern and care for. All of environmentalism, biology and sustainable development is a holy chore, straight from the Bible. Each time we allow a species to die or be damaged, we have turned our backs upon the responsibility given to us in the Bible.
Why the Bush administration, which portrays itself as "faith-based," chooses not just to shirk this responsibility but to actively work against it is a mystery.

It's the supreme directive. That's it! He's a sinner.
