OK.

I rely on... I trust -- my vast LJ brain trust to keep me informed of the latest trends.

And what happens?

In a story so stale the New York Times wrote about it just about a week ago (note: I bet that story goes into the paid archive any moment now), there's a video that's been sweeping the net of a guy lip-synching to the Romanian group O-Zone's single, "Dragostea Din Tei." (Note 2: The video uses Macromedia Flash. Why in god's name anyone would use a vector format for a video beats me, but there you go...)

Now, yeah, it seems to just be a pudgy fanboy (more than a twinge of self-recognition there)... But a) He's got the timing down, and b) It's a real catchy tune. I can see why zannah already knew about it, and why it's been bubbling along in Europe for a while now, it seems.

Interestingly, this seems to be the first time a Romanian group has had a breakout hit. The lyrics are apparently just shy of baby-talk/stream-of-consciousness. And of course, Amurricans being Amurricans, you'll get the most hits off of Google regarding this thing not on the title "Dragostea Din Tei," but by searching on "numa numa," which is in a refrain.

And, of course, all this talk of Romania just makes me think about Maggy. But that really is just me.

You know, Romania isn't part of whatever copyright agreements that Italy is and a copycat band released the song in Italy and got a number one and didn't have to pay royalties. Bizarrely, when they released their version in Italy it also went to number one.

I feel so bad for the guy. The NY Times was talking about how the kid was just overcome with embarrassment and has become very depressed since the video made its "break-through."

Watching it, I think it's kinda cute...a little silly maybe, but sort of endearing. *shrug* Maybe I'd feel differently if it were me. :)

He probably uses flash because it won't conflict with any operating system. If it was .mov or .wmv there would be problems.
