Turns out the Census Bureau has a new report on commuting.

One of the mantras of the Seattle area is how bad the traffic allegedly is. Having lived in LA so long, I generally smile a bit at this.

The Census Bureau puts Seattle 16th in commute time (click on the .PDF report by "Place"), behind usual suspects like New York, Chicago, LA, Miami, Philly, etc., etc.

A feature of this report (picked up by the New York Times) is a breakdown of "extreme commutes". No, it's not the latest X-Games event, the term refers to commute times that average over 90 minutes, round trip.

As one might guess, Seattle isn't in the top ten table on that, either. Although LA metro comes in with entries in the #4 and #5 spots. (Why the Census Bureau continues to carve up LA into 4 or 5 separate areas is beyond me. They do the same thing with NYC.)

In my experience, EVERY city thinks they have the worst traffic/drivers/commutes ...

Interesting. San Francsisco doesn't seem to figure in there at all, but there are times that I swear our traffic is worse than LA because we're so cramped here.

I'm fortunate, really. My commute is 4 miles and I make it by bus. And as I watch the rising cost of gas at the pumps, I'm very glad I don't own a car. However, I have battled traffic in the LA basin as well. It is one of the primary reasons I wouldn't move to SoCal. If I could live and work in Pasadena, maybe. But, only if you promised me I'd never, EVER, have to drive into the LA basin.

San Francisco is in the report -- I just didn't mention it by name. You'd have had to click through to the .PDFs. :)

Here's the ranking for SF-area cities:

9th - San Francisco
13th - Oakland
28th - San Jose

SF is also 9th for "extreme commutes".

My current commute is quite beautiful. It's 10 miles, but it's along the length of Lake Sammmamish. But that's only 'til tomorrow, when my contract ends. We'll see what happens next. :)

(which I've been all too prone to, lately)

"Sammamish". Sorry.

MA at least placed in the top ten. But we're not listed in county or city top ten.

Jenn is her own extreme commute. My commute is approx. (if the train is running on schedule and the T isn't broken down), door to door, 1 hour and 15 minutes one way.

I've stated that Seattle couldn't possibly be fourth in the nation.

LA is always first, with SF and DC fighting it out for second and third place. Chicago, Boston, and NYC definitely have much worse traffic than Seattle and those are just the places I've been...
