Here's a great quote by a young Congressman in 1966, talking about Viet Nam in the Chicago Tribune:

"The administration should clarify its intent in Viet Nam,' he said. 'People lack confidence in the credibility of our government. Even our allies are beginning to suspect what we say,' he charged. 'It's a difficult thing today to be informed about our government even without all the secrecy,' he said. 'With the secrecy, it's impossible. The American people will do what’s right when they have the information they need."

The Congresscritter in question? Donald Rumsfeld.

Congr. Rumsfeld

Hehtm. Plus ça change, eh?

I confess that I grew up mostly in the district that elected him, though it's not my fault (I wasn't old enough to vote, then). Somewhere, though, I own a "Rumsfeld for Congress" button. If I ever find it again, I'll probably put it up on eBay so that I get *some* sort of benefit from his public life. Gods know, it's not because he's doing us any favors as a high-level administration official.
