Fun with Cartesian matrices
Oct. 12th, 2007 02:14 amWhat's funny is that I used a similar argument once at work (this would be at Gallo in the late 1980s). I forget how the hypothetical came up -- it might have been a news item -- but I mentioned to a co-worker that I just might shoot someone I found who'd broken into my house. She was horrified. I pointed out that if someone was so contemptuous of the social contract to have broken into my house in the first place, then I had no idea just where their limits were. For all I knew, they were there to kill me.
"But they might not be!"
"Yeah, but here's the thing: If you're right and I'm wrong, I'm in jail. If I'm right and you're wrong, I'm dead."
I don't recommend this course of action. I'm just saying there's a similarity to the argument.
