From an article in the New York Times:

"In the end, the Yankees' trade for Alex Rodriguez is just another instance in which the Yankees beat the Red Sox. They beat them by finishing first in their division last season; they beat them in the postseason and went to the World Series; and now, in the game of winter hardball, it's Yankees 1, Red Sox 0."

Wellllll... as long as you leave out that Curt Schilling guy, in which case it's a 1-1 tie. And if you ignore the Yankees choking in said World Series, the same way they have in every single post-season of this century.

Looked at that way, the trade for A-Rod is a desperate attempt to forestall becoming irrelevant.

It'll be fun to see how the Yankees fuck it up this year, all the while proclaiming the inevitability of their victory.

No wonder Dubya used to own a ball club.

I heard about the A-Rod thing and thought, How can I possibly have even FEWER reasons to watch baseball?

That the Yankees are moving ARod to 3B rather than forcing their awful "captain" Derek Jeter to move indicates their imminent failure. They may well score more runs than anyone else, but with that godawful defense, they'll have an inordinate number scored against them. Here's to a high profile $200 million failure.

The last time I remember anyone trying to do this "two best buddies" schtick was when the Dodgers put Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis together in the early 1990's. And we all remember how many World Series rings that garnered. {cough}

But as you say, the fact that A-Rod is such a better shortstop than Jeter but they're moving A-Rod instead shows that maybe winning isn't the only important thing on this club. One wonders how many times A-Rod will be able to hold his piece when Jeter makes yet another athletic, balletic dive... that doesn't make it.
