I was able to root about and find a copy of "California Fairy Tale" by Jimmie Haskell.

The sung vocal is Joe Walsh. I have no idea who the news announcer is, or the bookended narrator.
Back in the Midland days, I was clearly drawn to the newscast. For something written in 1971 it's very much of its time, but it's not that wildly off of something Dick or Brunner would write.
Listening to it now, all the strings in the arrangement are amazing. Plus the foley bits. I could swear I hear a Space Invaders sound-sample in the mix under the end narration, but that didn't get released until 1978 -- which would've been right around when I first heard this, so that may be coloring my memory.

California '99
Date: 2011-02-25 10:43 pm (UTC)I, too, kept my eyes open on the Web until one day it popped up (I bought the Japanese CD from Amazon). So now I can hear it as it was intended instead of having vinyl like a veil over my ears.
There are quite a few electronic FX of one kind or another on the album; we had basic electronic sound generators in those days :)
The album concept IMO doesn't really stand the test of time. I'm not even sure I thought it was particularly sensible at the time - but there are some great pieces on there. I loved the broadcast-style V/O on this track, even though the content is hokey. But actually my favourite part of the track, and possibly the whole album, is the Hammond arpeggio at 3:35 (on the album version) just before the last verse - it sounds like it's a modulation but actually isn't (pity about the tape stretch or something that happens just after the vocals end).
